The cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is a close relative of the blueberry and lingonberry. Its name comes from the first settlers of America who called the fruit “crane berry” because the filaments of the flowers resemble the bill of a crane. The Indians of North America valued the bright red berries with the bitter-sour taste for their valuable ingredients. These special vital substances include phenols, proanthocyanidins, quercetin and other natural secondary plant substances.
