Taurine - an amino acid like compound
Taurine is not a classic amino acid, but an aminosulfonic acid - so on the one hand it contains sulphur, and on the other hand it is not incorporated into proteins by the body. Nevertheless, it is found in large quantities in almost all cells of the body, especially in active tissues such as muscle, heart and retina. Pure taurine was first obtained in 1827, when two Austrian scientists succeeded in isolating the substance from the bile of oxen. Hence the name: in Latin, "Taurus" means bull or ox. In humans, too, taurine is part of the bile, which is essential for fat digestion.
In the human diet, taurine is mainly found in meat and fish - milk, eggs and plant foods, on the other hand, are very low in taurine. If taurine is not supplied in sufficient quantities through food, the body produces it itself from the amino acid cysteine. Nevertheless, for certain people, a supply via food supplements can be useful. Biogena Taurine 750 offers a whole 750 mg of taurine in just one capsule and is therefore a practical and effective way to support daily taurine intake. We use 100% vegan taurine as a pure substance. It is therefore also suitable for a purely plant-based diet.
